The Sd.Kfz.234/4, the final armored car model produced in series, was introduced in 1944 as Germany's defense strategy shifted. To counter Soviet armored car superiority, the PaK-40 75 mm cannon was mounted on suitable chassis, including the Sd.Kfz.234. While tests revealed a narrow sector of fire and limited ammunition (36 rounds), the model demonstrated adequate mobility. By April 1945, with Germany's arms industry crumbling under Allied bombing, only 89 Sd.Kfz.234/4 units were produced.
