Construction began in early 1873 The lighthouse was put into operation 14 November 1874 The building is located on a granite caisson unique shape designed to protect against ice floes. The lighthouse was fully automated November 10, 1949 At first the lighthouse was operated by the US Coast Guard. In 2000, ownership of the lighthouse was finally handed over to the Society of Conservation HALPS, which conducts tours.
