“The Kundalini is sleeping above the Kanda dispensing liberation to Yogis and bondage to fools. He who knows her knows Yoga.” Kundalini is the name given to the Sacred Force, or Shakti, that is coiled at the base of the spine in the sacrum bone. Often drawn as a serpent, Swami Satyananda Sarawati in the Kundalini Tantra described it as the dormant potential force of the human organism. Vasant Rele in The Mysterious Kundalini, attempts to describe a physical basis of the practice of Kundalini Yoga as it pertains to the anatomy and physiology studied by the Western Medical Community. Rele’s approach catalogues a scientific study of both the physical layout of the body as well as the assertions that Yogis are able to control many seemingly involuntary muscles and processes in the body. Rele makes his assertions both through observation and by testing. For example, analyzing claims by Deshbandhu that “he could, under favourable conditions stop the heart for 18 seconds – a multiple of six”, Rele requested that he “undergo a test under X-Rays to show the stoppage of his heart under it.” These observations were monitored by multiple doctors in order to corroborate his findings. Rele’s work is meticulously recorded and painstakingly reasoned giving his account scientific authority. Illustrated with photos and drawings, this book was originally published by D.B. Taraporevala Sons & Co., Bombay in 1929. Read more
