• HOW TO IDENTIFY REAL BEESWAX: Are you concerned about accidentally acquiring wax claiming to be beeswax only to find out it is nothing more than a mixture of soy wax and paraffin? Keep these tips in mind:
• 1) Seek out beekeepers where possible. Beekeepers have beeswax. It's a natural byproduct of the honey extraction process. Working directly with beekeepers reduces the risk of accidentally acquiring blended or adulterated wax.
• 2) Watch the melting temperature. When melting wax, use a cooking thermometer to monitor the temperature at which the wax starts to melt. Pure beeswax has a higher and very narrow melting range of 144–147°F (62–64°C). By comparison, most soy waxes or blends start to melt in the range of 120–130°F (49–54°C), and most paraffin waxes begin melting around 120–135°F (49–57°C). A significantly lower melting temperature may indicate the presence of additives or blended waxes.
• 3) Consider acquiring beeswax in bars instead of pellets: Solid beeswax bars are easier to evaluate for purity. Genuine beeswax is firm and brittle at room temperature and typically cracks or snaps when cut. Adulterated or blended wax often feels softer or greasy and slices smoothly, more like butter. Pellets can make it more difficult to assess texture and quality, so bars are usually the better choice when purity matters.
• 4) True beeswax has a real cost. Rendering genuine beeswax takes time and labor. That is why authentic beeswax is going to be more costly than petroleum, synthetic, or plant-based substitutes. If a beeswax product seems unusually inexpensive, it may be worth considering it might be a wax blend.
• BEESWAX IS NATURALLY COLORED Beeswax gets its natural color from microscopic pollen particles present in the wax. The exact shade depends on the natural pollen the bees collect and where the wax is extracted from in the hive. Capping wax is the highest-grade beeswax, collected from the wax left over from the honey extraction process. lighter in color and burns with a naturally sweet aroma.
